Last week, MTV announced the latest addition to the list of performers at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Paramore joined a list that already contained the likes of Kanye West, Eminem, Drake, Florence and the Machine and B.o.B. The Tennessee quintet won't just be playing on the stage of the Nokia Theater, but they will also be competing for a number of Moonmen (as will singer Hayley Williams, as the guest star on B.o.B's multi-nominated clip for "Airplanes").
When the news that Paramore would be playing the VMAs (they last took the VMA stage in 2008, also the last time the show was in Los Angeles), we wondered aloud exactly which song the group should play. Considering that "Ignorance" is the clip that got all their nominations, one would assume that it would be the most logical choice for the show. However, if the majority of the over 15,000 people who voted in the poll hosted here at the MTV Newsroom Blog get their way, the band will be rolling out their big new single on a huge national stage.
"Playing God," the planned next single from the group's 2009 album Brand New Eyes, won the poll with 40 percent of the total vote. "Careful," another big single from Brand New Eyes, came in second place with 34 percent. "Ignorance" came in third with 13 percent, and "The Only Exception" and "Brick by Boring Brick" brought up the rear with six percent of the vote each.
Interestingly, a lot of the feedback in the comments section centered around "Brick by Boring Brick," which many fans seemed to think would be a natural fit for the VMAs. Several others also expressed that they would like to hear a medley of a few different songs to show off the band's range. Which song will Williams be voicing when the curtain rises on their performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? There's only one way to find out.
chekenlo......
Hayley Williams discussed her low-maintenance sartorial tastes with ELLE in July’s Women in Music issue, citing “a cut-up T-shirt and a good pair of pants that don’t show booty cleavage when you headbang” as her preferred onstage getup. But now, Paramore's flame-haired front woman's revealed a few other facts about her unstoppable pop-punk quintet—whose hit “Ignorance” is nominated for Best Rock Video at this year’s VMAs.
1. Our first show was on May 2nd, 2004 at The End in Nashville, TN. We were the local band opening for Copeland, who were one of our favorite bands at the time.
2. When we got signed to Fueled By Ramen records, Zac was in the 8th grade. He used the good news of our signing as inspiration for one of his "non-fiction" writing assignments at school, but the teacher knocked off points because she didn't believe it was "non-fiction". He quit school the week later.
3. Josh and I got our high school diplomas by finishing high school online while we were on tour.
4. I wrote the lyrics to our song "Fences", from RIOT!, across my SAT test paper.
5. Jeremy used to play a five-string bass because he's actually really good at slap-and-funk bass. He and I were in a funk cover band called The Factory, just before Paramore began.
6. Taylor is the newest official member of our band, but he's actually been around and writing with us since the beginning. The first song he and I wrote together was in 2003, "O Star." It's a B-side track to our first album, All We Know Is Falling.

Alt-rock group Paramore takes dip into pop waters
Even as it's winning new fans in the pop world, Paramore is working to keep its alternative rock base happy.
The Nashville, Tenn., quintet is working two singles: "The Only Exception," a ballad, and "Careful," which is geared to the alt market. And guitarist Josh Farro feels the latter is particularly important.
We really appreciate alternative rock situations, 'cause that's where we started, and I think it's important to cater to them," he explains. " 'The Only Exception' is doing so well on pop radio, but we want to make sure we keep our relationship with alternative rock stations. That's why we put 'Careful' out -- to give both radio [formats] a song."
Nevertheless, Farro and company think it's "cool" to have a pop hit from their third album, "Brand New Eyes," which came out in September. Lead singer Hayley Williams is getting radio play as well with her vocals on the top 10 B.o.b hit "Airplanes."
Alt-rock groups that cross over the pop divide often do so at their own risk, and Farro says Paramore is braced for a little backlash.
"We figured we would get some crap from fans just saying, 'Oh, I liked [2007's platinum-selling] 'Riot' more. I liked that sound more.' That's gonna happen," he says. "The fact is we're human. We all grew, and we're growing as individuals, so our styles change and our sound's gonna slightly change per record.
"I think we made a step in the right direction, and I still think it sounds like Paramore."
