Spoiler
B.o.B has racked up a bevy of hits from his freshman effort, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, but so far the Atlanta upstart's awards haul doesn't match his Billboard tally.
Maybe his luck will change at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards?
Among his five chances to score a Moonman on September 12, the melodic MC will vie for the night's biggest prize, the coveted Video of the Year award for his Hiro Murai-directed "Airplanes." If the clip wins, it certainly would have one of the more unique backstories of late.
B.o.B and the song's guest, Paramore's Hayley Williams, actually shot their parts separately at two different times (scheduling conflicts caused them to spread the production over three months); the pair also recorded the song at different times as well. In fact, the two artists — labelmates at Atlantic Records — will meet for the first time during the VMAs when they perform "Airplanes" together for the first time.
Despite the fact that B.o.B and Williams don't appear in any scenes together, visually they deliver just as well as they do vocally on the smash single. The dark tone of the record is represented in the clip. Light is used sparingly throughout the video, as B.o.B's punching lyrics about fortitude cut deep.
Production for the video was done in an abandoned warehouse and a dead-open space, which underscore elements of the song's lyrics, particularly the themes of emptiness. Williams can be seen in CGI-like Polaroid photos, generated from a rave of lurking party-goers; the singer's image flashes across the pictures.
B.o.B's defiant lyrics are in contrast to the subtle cues in the clip, creating a visual marriage that's as powerful as any of the other nominated candidates. And he certainly seemed to think so. The rapper was excited about his nominations when he spoke to MTV News. In particular, B.o.B was ecstatic about being recognized for accomplishments that reach beyond his chart-topping hits.
"It's very special to me. I think it's a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I've put in over the years and the word of mouth I've helped create," he said. "It's definitely amazing. I'm trying to find the words to explain it, but I can't. It's inexplicable. I'm a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude."

Last week, MTV announced the latest addition to the list of performers at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Paramore joined a list that already contained the likes of Kanye West, Eminem, Drake, Florence and the Machine and B.o.B. The Tennessee quintet won't just be playing on the stage of the Nokia Theater, but they will also be competing for a number of Moonmen (as will singer Hayley Williams, as the guest star on B.o.B's multi-nominated clip for "Airplanes").
When the news that Paramore would be playing the VMAs (they last took the VMA stage in 2008, also the last time the show was in Los Angeles), we wondered aloud exactly which song the group should play. Considering that "Ignorance" is the clip that got all their nominations, one would assume that it would be the most logical choice for the show. However, if the majority of the over 15,000 people who voted in the poll hosted here at the MTV Newsroom Blog get their way, the band will be rolling out their big new single on a huge national stage.
"Playing God," the planned next single from the group's 2009 album Brand New Eyes, won the poll with 40 percent of the total vote. "Careful," another big single from Brand New Eyes, came in second place with 34 percent. "Ignorance" came in third with 13 percent, and "The Only Exception" and "Brick by Boring Brick" brought up the rear with six percent of the vote each.
Interestingly, a lot of the feedback in the comments section centered around "Brick by Boring Brick," which many fans seemed to think would be a natural fit for the VMAs. Several others also expressed that they would like to hear a medley of a few different songs to show off the band's range. Which song will Williams be voicing when the curtain rises on their performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards? There's only one way to find out.
Hayley contesto la pregunta de un user de LiveJournal en la cual preguntaba si estarian en los VMA's de este año, confirmando su asistencia...
chekenlo......
Hayley Williams discussed her low-maintenance sartorial tastes with ELLE in July’s Women in Music issue, citing “a cut-up T-shirt and a good pair of pants that don’t show booty cleavage when you headbang” as her preferred onstage getup. But now, Paramore's flame-haired front woman's revealed a few other facts about her unstoppable pop-punk quintet—whose hit “Ignorance” is nominated for Best Rock Video at this year’s VMAs.
1. Our first show was on May 2nd, 2004 at The End in Nashville, TN. We were the local band opening for Copeland, who were one of our favorite bands at the time.
2. When we got signed to Fueled By Ramen records, Zac was in the 8th grade. He used the good news of our signing as inspiration for one of his "non-fiction" writing assignments at school, but the teacher knocked off points because she didn't believe it was "non-fiction". He quit school the week later.
3. Josh and I got our high school diplomas by finishing high school online while we were on tour.
4. I wrote the lyrics to our song "Fences", from RIOT!, across my SAT test paper.
5. Jeremy used to play a five-string bass because he's actually really good at slap-and-funk bass. He and I were in a funk cover band called The Factory, just before Paramore began.
6. Taylor is the newest official member of our band, but he's actually been around and writing with us since the beginning. The first song he and I wrote together was in 2003, "O Star." It's a B-side track to our first album, All We Know Is Falling.
